Running a small to very large network involves needing to know how well, or poorly, your servers are doing. Any downtime can mean a lot of revenue loss, and revenue loss is very very bad. Monitoring is aided by tools that do exactly that, monitor the expected results of your servers and reports anything that's abnormal about them.

I will be discussing several monitoring techniques that are primarily available to the public, usually open source monitoring agents and tools.
